Coursera, for instance, created small collaborative sub-teams of 2-4 data scientists to work closely with different functions and business units to better understand their business goals.
Let’s say the business ask is a vague statement like, “we want to increase sales.” This is an opportunity for the data scientist to add value by working with business stakeholders to find a solution for the abstract business problem. Depending on the business they are in, the data scientist can breakdown the problem (sales, in this case) into smaller subsets - sales by product line or new and existing clients - so the trends become easily visible. The data scientist can also look at targeted marketing with proper segmentation, scoring and ranking of the buyers. There are multiple ways to slice a problem. Understanding the business mandate as well as industry trends not only helps in effective resolution but also in creating an innovative data culture that adds value to the organization.
Augmenting technical data skills
As per a recent ET report, there has been a 400% rise in demand for data science professionals in India across industries, but the supply has grown only by 19% in the past year. LinkedIn, for instance, closely evaluates candidates’ communication, project management, and influence skills when hiring for data scientist positions, as it considers these skills to be as important for success as hard skills.
More than 39,000 analytics jobs are expected to be created in India alone by 2020. Intelligent machines based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can provide data science hard skills to a certain extent. But people skills and a business understanding is something machines cannot replicate. While data can tell multiple stories, it needs creativity and talent to discover all the possibilities from the given data to improve products and services. We crown Subramani as our Student of the Fortnight for perfectly treading the course he plotted and landing a job in a multinational information technology and outsourcing company Mindtree.
No space for doubt
Subramani thinks students choose data science for two main reasons. The first reason is that big data analytics skills are high in demand and secondly, they can set your career on the fast track. He had one more reason that he believed was most important for his success. He confides that he is really fascinated by new and upcoming technologies. Earlier, he had participated in robotics competitions and even won at intra college science forum.
He says, “I was more interested in the latest technologies and innovations like 5G technologies, driverless cars, and robotics. I discovered that Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence are core to these innovations.” He claims passion is important if you want to succeed.
Subramani also got a little taste of data science prior to his full-fledged commitment to this field. It came as an internship opportunity with Bosch Ltd for 5 months. He said that during this internship opportunity his interest in data science really grew and he decided to take up a data science course.
An uncompromising approach
Subramani researched for more than two months just to find a course that met his requirements. He found Manipal ProLearn to particularly fit his set parameters among all classroom data science programs. He says, “I also received positive feedback and comments from my friends, relatives and other passed out students from the course, which strongly made me enroll for the PG Diploma in Data Science program at Manipal.”
Starting off on the right foot
Subramani felt he got the right push off the block as the faculty at Manipal really helped him get the fundamentals right. Along came appraisals for his hard work that motivated him to keep going. Another fact that he liked about the course was the way it is designed. It helped the students to not lose out on any topics and there was always a connection between the previous sections and the next section. However, his biggest expectation was to get placed in a reputed company for the skills he had developed at Manipal.
As dreamt, he got placed in Mindtree. He recalls, “As a fresher, I was looking to start my career in some good MNC, and I am very happy to say that I got placed in Mindtree.”
Now, he is very excited to earn an opportunity to apply his technical knowledge and skills in the analytics domain. He thinks the first few years will be a huge learning curve for him and allow him to grasp and sharpen his industry knowledge and technical abilities.
Revisiting the trail he blazed
Subramani didn’t get the news of his accomplishment straight away. He had to wait for two weeks to get a confirmation from Mindtree. In between, he had already started applying for jobs online and kept preparing for the unexpected. But the news of his placement came soon and all he did first was to call his parents to share the news.
He thanks his parents, Manipal ProLearn and his friends who have helped and supported him to achieve this milestone.
