Every group of friends has that one person, who, after a couple of drinks becomes a theoretical physicist/wannabe anthropologist/social commentator who asks a random hypothetical question, which sends everyone into a three-hour long spiral trying to answer that question. It usually starts with something mundane like talking about bananas and an hour later you’re trying to find the Buzzfeed video where they tied balloons to a banana till they were able to get it off the ground.
And it’s not just your group of friends - there’s even a book by the creators of xkcd.com called “What If?” that goes into complex scientific calculations to answer absurd hypothetical questions like “How many humans would a T-Rex rampaging through New York need to eat a day?”
However, getting to the point now, what if you could do those same calculations, or at least pull up some statistics to substantiate your argument, without needing to know query languages or statistical analysis? What if Siri could tell you about the average weight of different types of bananas around the world and run some numbers about this season’s banana harvest?
Siri to the rescue
Siri, right now, helps perform simple requests like defining words and setting alarms through natural language processing. She also learns more about you on the go through machine learning.
However, is that all Siri can do? It’s been seen before in the mobility industry that a lot of features and functions built for end-users slowly get absorbed into the enterprise when they become indispensable to users. Siri could be next on that list. When users become so attuned to asking Siri for help for all kinds of things, they will want to use her help at work also. The next step could be to ask Siri questions that you would normally spend a day reading about and analysing.
How will it work?
In essence, Siri could potentially take the same natural language processing and machine learning to convert questions into queries to pull data and give you an analysis of that data. Over time, Siri could learn about the types of questions you ask and offer additional insights, or pull up more accurate information that’s tailored to you. She could go from a personal assistant to an intern or business analyst and back again as needed.
If Siri’s technology becomes ubiquitous, i.e. goes from an application to a platform, enterprises could potentially give their users access to statistics and analytical data that can crunch numbers, generate reports, and share results without users having to do so much as touch a button.
For a world focused one-click solutions, Siri as a personal data analyst could potentially disrupt the data analysis industry, by revolutionizing the way people view and interact with data. The best of Siri is yet to come and data analysis interns better watch out for her!

How do you find out more about new and used cars with all specifications, reviews and price details? Edmunds.com is an online portal for automotive information. It lets users research about new and the used cars. It offers full technical specifications, user reviews, vehicle comparisons and buying-advice from experts. Headquartered in Santa Monica, the company is almost half a century old. Shopping being the main business focus, it is essential for Edmunds to offer the users with accurate and relevant information on vehicles. Edmunds has to rely on Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for vehicle specifications. The vehicle-data provided by OEMs is unstructured, usually available in the form of cumbersome multiple PDF documents. Earlier, it took about 2 weeks to manually convert the data into a suitable form that can go live on the website.
- Having an updated Edmunds’ database and a real-time inventory that accurately describes Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs).
- Speeding and augmenting the existing manual process of converting OEM data to live information that is available on their website (to reduce overall time-to-market).
Edmunds approached Silicon Valley Data Science (SVDS), a consulting firm specializing in agile and business-focus solutions, for help. SVDS built an extraction service that extracts and converts complex PDF data into raw text. Further, they built an “ontology-based attribute prediction engine using Idibon’s cloud-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) services”. This set-up allowed Edmunds to automatically extract data (information) about hundreds of car-relevant features and functions from the raw text. Post this, the NLP system could now create groups, categories, features-list and vehicle attributes to define and describe new car models in Edmunds’ database. The system now is thoroughly capable of handling all user queries and offers them with relevant search results and up-to-date information and specifications on hundreds of old and new cars.
- Edmunds can now use the NLP model not only for providing car information but for processing unstructured data from a variety of sources. It means more “analytics-muscle” and more business.
- The time-to-market reduced to 2 days from 2 weeks using this NLP data processing model.
- Reduced 95% of the backlogs at Edmunds’ end.

Language processing tools can now figure out overall tone in social media posts. Sentiment analysis measures positive and negative keywords in the sentences you type out. It deciphers if your review or comment has you feeling good or bad. It’s not hard to extrapolate from there. Tracking data about your behavior patterns across social media platforms, over time, can indicate if you’re a positive or negative person online. Now let’s say you’re positive when everyone else is being negative, consistently across platforms and over time. It could be pretty easy to conclude that you’re an optimist – the ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. And the same applies to someone who is the cloudy day.
Technology is tracking you, every step of the way:
At this point you’re probably feeling like you’ve had your privacy violated. Or that your seemingly harmless social media posts and comments shouldn’t be used to categorize you as a type. It’s understandable. To avoid being tracked like this you would need to get off all social media platforms, implement a strict regime of clearing browser-history, cookies and credit card information. But you don’t need to worry that much. For the most part, business analysts performing sentiment analysis are looking for trends and aggregated data to collect as feedback mechanisms. For example, restaurants can aggregate data across platforms for brand management. Sentiment analysis on Twitter has helped in tracking reactions during the US presidential elections. Moving beyond the analysis of text, call centers could use audio data to track and measure trends in customer service.
That’s not it, there’s more:
Marketing and feedback mechanisms are not the only activities sentiment tracking can do. With some additional demographic information, a data scientist could draw connections between optimism and pessimism across age, gender, economic status, education level. And the list goes on. For instance – Microsoft Labs that predicted postnatal depression just by tracking one user’s twitter feed. The potential for sentiment analysis is huge. With consent, mining the social media interaction can reveal behavioral patterns or sudden changes in personality. Doing so can potentially identifying disorders that people might not even know they have.
There is a lot of work to be done in refining algorithms and going beyond a linear positive to negative scale. The opportunities for data science applications are endless.

How often have you heard the term ‘Internet of Things’? It is mostly used while explaining concepts like big data and analytics, but how many of us actually know what it stands for? To make things simpler, Manipal Prolearn of Data Science organised a webinar on March 2, 2017, focussing on the Internet of Things.
The session titled, “An Industrial and Smart City Perspective on Internet of Things” was conducted by Mr. Sundeep Mishra, who has been a part of the analytics industry for about a decade. Presently associated with Genpact as a Risk Analyst, Sundeep started the session with a quick question for the audience testing their knowledge on the topic.
Brushing up the basics – What is IoT?
Sundeep explained how the Internet of Things (IoT) is different from the regular internet. Citing the examples of everyday gadgets like home security systems and temperature controllers, he described how IoT is a collective term for the network of devices that are connected with each other through the internet and are used to collect or exchange data.
For example, a thing in the Internet of Things could be a heart monitor implant used by a heart patient, a biochip transponder used on a farm animal, built-in sensors of an automobile and so on. All these devices are a part of the same ecosystem and collectively form the Internet of Things.
Difference between Industrial Internet of Things and IoT
Next, Sundeep threw light on the concept of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and explained the significance of IoT in the same. Industrial Internet of Things is the incorporation of a wireless network, analytical tools and big data with industrial devices.
While the concept remains the same in the case of both IIoT and IoT, the difference lies in their usage. As the name suggests, IIoT serves its purpose mostly in the industrial application while IoT is usually consumer-based. IIoT relies on comparatively sophisticated and complex devices offering greater visibility and automated control. IoT, on the other hand, concentrates on improving the consumer experience.
Need for Industrial Internet of Things
IIoT is a relatively new concept. It is an untapped area, but has the potential to change everything around us, Sundeep said. While close to 80% businesses are aware that IIoT has a pivotal role to play in the industry, only 25% of them have a clear strategy in place about it.
Sundeep brought up an alarming fact that less than 1% of the available data is being used by industries currently, the reason being lack of structured data. Unstructured data is available in various forms – Excel sheets, images, statistics, information collected over the years etc. All of this needs to be filtered out and cleaned before being put to use, which is the need of the hour.
Challenges while adoping an IoT system
The biggest challenge while adopting an efficient IoT environment, Sundeep specified, is the existence of various protocols connected with multiple devices. He specified that technology was never the problem in the case of the application of IoT. The challenges had always been the lack of strategy and a clear vision of how to adopt an IoT system.
How will IoT shape the future of smart cities?
Towards the end of the session, Sundeep brought up the concept of smart cities and the role IoT has to play in their development. He spoke about the features of smart cities like smart parking, digital payments, climate control and so on and how IoT can help make them a reality.
By 2020, 4 billion people in smart cities are expected to be connected to the IoT. Sundeep emphasised that the analytics part of IoT has the most value to offer as it helps come up with effective strategies.
Smart cities rely greatly on IoT to create a system for optimal use of resources. Imagine living in a neighbourhood where your car sensor notifies you about free parking space, garbage trucks receive alert messages when any area needs the service, an in-built terminal in your house connects you to the public infrastructure monitoring systems and so on.
Of course, building such smart cities will come with their own set of challenges too. However, the increasing reach of technology and smartphones will aid in overcoming a lot of these issues.
Lastly, Sundeep concluded the webinar with a stimulating question and answer session further clearing the doubts of the audience and enlightening them on the concept of IoT.

Me Every Morning
It’s 6 am. This is my time. My mornings start with a mix of reading, puzzle-solving and exercise. I dedicate these three hours just to myself, away from the phone - and the world connected to it.
Fun fact: According to a study, morning people are less likely to procrastinate.
I start with a jog to the club where I do some form of exercise. Today, I chose to swim. After the swim, my hunger pangs kicked in a little earlier than usual. While eating breakfast, I continued reading Freakonomics – an interesting take of a rogue economist on the hidden side of everything. The book heavily uses data to identify and study some common and not-so-common phenomena. This helps someone like me gain a fresh perspective on things. Later, during my commute to work, I solve my daily puzzle. Currently, I’m obsessed with Japanese puzzles!
Also, did you know that the average speed of a vehicle in Bangalore traffic is just 9.2 kmph? That gives me a LOT of me time!
At 10:15 every day, we have our ‘Position-Progress-Pain’ meeting, it’s basically a team status meeting to share our current status, progress and pain points on the project. During this meeting, we spend some time discussing the different ways we could analyze the same data sets to predict different outcomes. We study various scientific papers that can help us understand and eventually solve the problem at hand or even discuss new tools that we could use in our field of work.
The stat that led us to a 14-minute only meeting: executives spend up to 50% of their working hours in meetings. Up to 50% of that meeting time is unproductive!
Time to Work*
After the meeting, with a goal in mind, I’m in my zone and ready to tackle the task at hand.
During this time, I’m constantly looking at data and shaping/modeling it. I ask myself the questions that I am going to answer by the end of the day. In the field of Data Science, one has to be curious, that is because to find the answer to one BIG question – a Data Scientist needs to ask - and answer - several other relatively smaller questions.
After I’m done getting my ‘small’ answers, I need to translate my work into something that will be useful to my stakeholders. I use the word ‘translate’ because our complex data models are far from easy to understand.
Quick fun fact: More than 90% of all the data in the globe was generated over the course of past two years.
In Between My Work
Lunch is sometimes eaten while helping my colleagues write code to calculate a Gaussian Hyper-Geometric Function or model different probability distributions. Lunch is never just eating.
Wrapping It Up
This is when I give attention to all the things that don’t need my immediate attention. Non-urgent Emails, quick client calls and everyday managerial tasks take up this part of the day. I am currently sitting with the team and looking at their arching patterns that they have created with the help of data modeling tools. This is the time when we step back and check if we’re getting any closer to answering the BIG question.
It’s about 8:30 pm (on an average) when I get home. But the night is young. I get my dinner and crawl in bed watching a sci-fi movie/show or continue reading my current book. I’m currently watching this show called ‘Mr. Robot’ and I am absolutely loving it.
Last fun fact: Netflix users watched 42.5 billion streaming hours in 2015 alone!

BACKGROUND AND COMPANY
Faiveley Transport is an international innovator, manufacturer and supplier of equipment for the railway industry. Established in 1919 in France, it has now firmly cemented its position as a leading company in its respective sector. The company’s scope of supply includes the study, design, manufacture and the delivery of the required equipment. The company is also a major player in the railway sector of India, and has been a major equipment supplier for Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad metro systems.
In 2016, Faiveley Transport extended their capacity and capabilities at Hosur site, near Bengaluru, in order to cover the entire range of their product portfolio. The site thus grew, witnessing an increase in activity and turnover. As a result of the expansion, the company started running projects, which necessitated training of managers in Microsoft® Project. Such a training was important to plan and run projects effectively.
OUR ROLE AND SOLUTION
It is at this juncture that Manipal Prolearn was roped in by Faiveley Transport to provide training to the company’s managers in Microsoft® Project. Although some of them were aware of some features of Project, what was needed was a comprehensive picture of the capabilities of Microsoft® Project.
Training in Microsoft® Project cannot be a conventional training where the instructor talks and the learners listen. It has to be hands-on lab.
Project has many features. It has to be ensured that the learners are not overwhelmed with information on the features. This may confuse the learners and turn them off.
The training philosophy was not explaining a tool feature and its purpose. It was the other way round. A typical project management need was described followed by the relevant tool features
The training followed the typical project sequence – planning, updating, monitoring, controlling and reporting.
Further the training was split at two levels – basic and advanced. The basic part dealt with the bare minimum no frills project scheduling. The advanced part covered advanced features.
An example project schedule ran along in the background for the training.
The learners were encouraged to work in pairs to correct each other if needed. In addition, the instructor also gave attention to each learner individually.
POST CLASSROOM TRAINING
The learners will get access to online course material and quizzes. In addition, they could approach the subject matter expert for any advice.
With this we have added yet another competency level amongst the Faiveley audience. The workshop was engaging and had specific learning outcomes. The post workshop online learning will ensure concepts learnt in the class are revised regularly and skills are fine-tuned further.
