Why it’s the Right Time to be a Data Scientist in India?
By Afia Ahmad
The world is undergoing a huge transformation with Data Science; it is driving growth and innovation in every field. It is now easy to analyze problems and find best solution as per the requirement. Data scientists are helping businesses understand the consumer behavior by using customer analytics tools and then market the product through social media by application of Social Network Analysis. From finance to marketing to research to politics, data scientists are dramatically changing the whole world.
Organizations are investing in upskilling their staff with Data Science courses, to meet this demand. Google, Airbnb, Amazon etc. prefer candidates with strong fundamentals rather than mere know-how in data science.
Data scientists and our developing country
For a developing country such as India, the advancement in the field of Big Data analytics is important. It helps the country grow faster. Moreover, optimum utilization of resources happens when big data scientists gather, analyze and create insights from the data available; and with it, the country progresses.
But, the trouble is that India is undergoing a huge shortage of data scientists. Large companies, startups and government agencies are in demand for people who can understand and synthesize Big Data. A popular GitHub thread defines a Data Scientist as someone ‘who knows more statistics than a developer and more computer science than statistician’. It is clear that Data Scientists require a special skill set and their skills will provide an ultimate edge and upgrade to the productivity and functionality of any field and industry.
Data science makes you a rockstar
Because of a high demand of data scientists in India, this is the right time to take data science training and get into the lime-light. Currently there are only around 25,000 engineers who understand machine learning techniques, a number which is very small. Now that you know what the market wants, you must take steps and make yourself more employable.
You’ve got a crystal ball of opportunities in your hand:
Once you complete a data science course you become a superhero who can almost predict the future through past data. You can answer questions such as: what's happening? What is going to happen? What should we do now? These are known commonly as Business Intelligence, Predictive Analytics and Customer Analytics.
The sky is the limit:
PayTm has hired a team of 8 data scientists, and pays around Rs. 1.5 crores to each of them. The team, through its analysis will generate different insights for various verticals by looking at data from different perspectives. Fraud detection and upselling are the primary areas of focus.
Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon and Walmart are other companies waving fat pay packets to the top data scientists in the country.
By playing your skill set right, an engineer can easily earn Rs.7-9 lakhs every year. There are a lot of premium institutions offering well crafted courses in Data Science. For instance, Manipal ProLearn offers part-time and full-time courses in Data Science that covers base and helps in upskilling. Data Science is garnering a lot of attention and awareness; though it is not entirely sufficient, it is a start and now is the time to optimize upon the number of opportunities this field has to offer.
