The appraisal season is about to end. Feeling anxious that you might not have done enough to impress? Don’t worry! Because there’s still some time to make that final impression. According to a recent report by Economic Times, employees are expected to get a pay hike of 9-15% this year. So, whether it’s processing a few more queries as a big data scientist or coming up with a mind-blowing last-minute digital marketing strategy, you can always get noticed before your appraisal review! How so? By following these four steps!
1. Go the extra mile
Yeah, that’s a no-brainer, but there is no better way of getting noticed or rather staying in your boss’s mind (for that promotion recommendation) than by exceeding the expectations. Only sticking to what you are supposed to do is never enough, especially when eyeing a promotion.
According to PwC, India is adding at least 7.2 million new employees in the workforce every year, and if you want to get noticed, you must find ways to exceed your employer's expectations with your performance. An obvious way is always to make sure that projects are completed well before deadlines. This will help you get recognized by your employer, which will motivate you further. Putting in extra hours to meet targets or contributing beyond your defined role shows your sincerity and willingness to sacrifice 'me' time for the organisation.
2. Start offering constructive feedback
There might have been times when you felt that a project could be completed in a better way by using a different technique or strategy, but you thought 'Why do I care?' or were afraid that you might be criticized for your opinion. Giving no feedback is the biggest mistake you can make. Yes, we agree it is a stressful time, with around 64% employees feeling the impulse to quit right after their appraisal.* However, it is also a good time to talk about the processes which affect your performance, directly or indirectly. So as the appraisal season is about to draw to a conclusion, take the opportunity to share some constructive feedback.
Take your time, analyse how project output can be improved, make a detailed feedback plan and approach your boss. For example, if you’re a budding product manager, why not speak to your boss about how you think product delivery timelines can be optimized? It would show him/her that you see the bigger picture.
3. Start taking initiatives
Initiative and creativity move the world. Waiting for detailed instructions for every small thing will waste your time. You must build the drive to grow and achieve organisational goals. It’s important to think beyond the loop of appraisals and try to concentrate on areas where you can deliver tangible and visible results. 4. Take up responsibility for your appraisal
Take responsibility for how you feel and actively prepare for any outcome of the appraisal. People Matters in 2017 reported that the healthcare firm Practo laid off 150 employees immediately after the appraisal process. You must prepare your appraisal plan so that you can present yourself to your employer as a valuable asset. Review your job description, the goals you want to achieve in the future, and your areas of development as well as those requiring improvement.
