Want to Be a Growth Hacker? Master These 4 Skills
By Afia Ahmad
We know that the main job of a growth hacker is to find the most effective and efficient ways to grow a business as soon as possible. Growth hackers are not just marketers, they are also engineers and product managers who devote themselves to finding ways to build and engage a user base. It is a key task on which several companies depend. And you need these four skills to be a good Growth Hacker:
Growth Hackers need to make decisions based on data; and statistics is nothing but the language of data. One needs to know the fundamentals such as statistical significance, average and median and more, to be able to run basic A/B tests. To predict growth, an understanding of models based on regression and smoothing along with data visualisation is needed. In other words, statistics is the raw data based on which decisions will be made; hence there is no getting by without this.

Having some knowledge of programming is necessary for a good Growth Hacker. One needn’t be the best programmer on the block, but a certain level of programming knowledge is needed, especially to build and execute small things such as A/B tests. An A/B test helps a hacker compare the performance of two versions of a web page, app, advertisement, messaging, buttons, interfaces etc. This test helps measure the performance of both A and B and pinpoint the variable affecting the user.

Data is freely available around us everywhere. However, it is useless if we don’t know how to understand and make sense of it. Any brand can look to Google Analytics, Kissmetrics, Mixpanel along with specialised analytics on Facebook, Twitter, Adwords etc to see how their brand is doing. However, without knowing how to segment visitors they will never get the insights they need. A hacker has to be able to do this as well as analyse unique users, sessions, page views, bounce rate, conversions and more to pinpoint what changes need to be made.

Excel spreadsheets are a basic tool to gather and understand data. A Pivot table will be able to give you great insights into what action a customer is more likely to take. For example, is a customer who reads two newspapers a week more likely to buy your product as compared to a customer who reads only one newspaper?
The other way to use spreadsheets is by mastering formulas such as Vlookup and more. Now, there are plugins available that allow you to analyse data collected from different sources. However, it’s always good to have solid basic knowledge of spreadsheets to carry out more complex analysis.
