A gold medal in MBA, an inquisitive mind well-trained in market research, and a top job in ITC FMCG. Varun had all the credentials to chart an illustrious course in his career even before he joined Manipal ProLearn. But he listened to his inner calling to learn data science and foster his interest in analytics, realizing that it is the next big thing.
What happened next is something that has set Varun as an example for other data science enthusiasts to follow. A trailblazer in every sense, Varun (knowingly or unknowingly) used his gut instincts, heart and mind together to shape his career in such a way that his passion turned into his profession with a job in his dream company - Nielsen.
And that makes Varun our Student Of The Fortnight as he deserves every bit of it! Let’s find out more about his interesting journey and learn a thing or two about diving into the world of numbers as a data scientist.
How often do you feel that time is running out and it might just be your last chance to go for it? Posted in ITC FMCG Tobacco division in Warangal, Varun was brewing similar thoughts and used his free time to search about data science and related courses offered in India. He was confident that his business knowledge and market research expertise clubbed with analytics will be a robust mix for his future aspirations.
Getting the equation right
Your dreams equate to reality when you choose the right platform. Hailing from the state of Karnataka, Varun explained that he was well aware of the reputation carried by Manipal Academy of Higher Education and joined Manipal ProLearn’s PG Diploma in Data Science program. “It was not a difficult choice for me and I knew that I was taking the right call by choosing Manipal ProLearn,” he said.
Industry-ready from the go
Having honed valuable business problem-solving skills in his professional tenure, Varun was happy to realize that Manipal’s data science program would complement his industry experience with hands-on-training in programming and predictive data analytics techniques.
Varun cherishes the guidance of his mentors and faculty. He made a special mention of Mr. Kathirmani Sukumaran and Mr. Amit Choudary for giving him the right industry perspective and practical cases to work on, which made him self-confident about his newly acquired skills.
Evolving as a person at ProLearn
Being a part of a batch with a diverse mix of students from engineering, pharma, commerce etc., Varun’s perspective has grown wider with every single classroom interaction. He believes it has helped him grow and evolve as a person.
Recalling one particular incident at a ProLearn hackathon, Varun said, “I had teamed up with a classmate and we had a major misunderstanding, but by the end of the exercise I was not only able to learn new concepts but also sort out our personal differences.” A lesson for life!
Working in your dream company is no less than watching a beautiful dream every single day. People snap out of a dream, but for Varun it was the other way around. He was eagerly waiting for a call from Nielsen after his interview, and when the phone finally rang, a friend answered it to hear the news of his selection as Varun himself was away.
A couple of moments later, all his friends gathered outside the lecture hall and broke the news in a chorus to an unprepared Varun who thought that it was surely a dream. Varun is looking forward to meeting his family and celebrating his moment of victory with them.
We congratulate Varun for having the courage to follow his heart and the resolve to achieve his goal. Our best wishes are with you, Varun!
