‘Do what you love and love what you do’ can be a revelation people may come across even after getting a taste of success in a different profession. But how often do you pay heed to your inner calling and turn back to do what you really want to do?
The one who dares, wins!
Here’s a story of a professor-cum-programmer who turned his wheel of fortune to not only find his true passion, but also land a dream job in Equifax, a leading firm in consumer credit reporting.
Interested to know how? Let’s not hold the suspense any longer and reveal the hero of our story, Sujit Mohapatra, by crowning him as Manipal ProLearn’s Student of the Fortnight.
Not doing it just for the pay cheque
After completing his M.Tech in Electrical Engineering, Sujit began his career as an assistant professor in a college. But a stable career with a good package wasn’t giving him the career satisfaction he longed for. He often shuffled between thoughts of joining software industry or turning his freelance programming into something substantial. What he did realize was that he was not going to do it just for the pay cheque.
Bold meets beautiful
It was a day that made a huge difference in Sujit’s life. Sujit, while browsing the internet, came across the term data science, and that was the day that changed everything for him. The call of destiny, you might say.
Sujit was intrigued, as it was an amalgamation of programming and statistical analysis. He was passionate about mathematics and even conducted mathematics classes for MBA and engineering students before. He instantly felt this is a career choice meant for him. .
On the track again
Sujit’s approach to finding the right institute for doing a data science course was rather meticulous. He visited various institutions and met the counselors there. He looked beyond the institutes that offered only an online program. “I was taking a bold step of a career change, so didn't want any lacuna.” He finally zeroed in on Manipal for its curriculum and more importantly for being ranked the third best analytics course in India by Analytics India Magazine.
Finding rhythm and speed
Sujit said many of his expectations were met after joining the institute, yet the hostel made him miss his home food. Sujit felt lucky to be trained and mentored in the right data analytics techniques by experts like Mr. S Kathirmani and Mr. Amit Choudhary. And this knowledge helped him reach his goal.
First through the finish line
Sujit was among the first few to run through the ribbon and land a job. Equifax was the second company that visited the campus for placements. Sujit got placed in Equifax as a consultant. A dream profile according to him as it involves programming, interacting and storytelling to clients. In his own words, “I am very pleased to grab a job that perfectly utilizes my skills.”
Walking down the memory lane
Along with bagging a great job offer, Sujit has also created unforgettable memories at Manipal. He gathered vivid memories of participating in competitions, driving to Nandi Hills on a bike to see a beautiful sunrise and cutting his birthday cake three times on the same day, not to mention the birthday bumps that came along.
When Sujit broke the news to his parents, they were delighted. They were happy to see their son dare to follow his dream and find his passion.
We are truly inspired by Sujit for taking an overly used phrase and breathing life into it with his determination. We wish him the best for his future endeavors.
