Marching on Towards a Bright Future!
An engineer with experience in the defence sector, who is now foraying into data analytics.
Meet Anupam, a student of Manipal ProLearn’s classroom training program. She completed her B.Tech in 2004, and she’s a data science enthusiast because she believes that the field is going to be all the rage in the future.
Also, she’s not just your everyday student. Of course, no ProLearner is, but what sets Anupam truly apart is that she was a part of the defence and security industry!
Pretty cool right? So, it’s only natural for us to honor her with the title of “Student of the Fortnight”.
Let’s find out a bit more about her journey in life, and how she plans to continue her march into a successful career as a data scientist.
ProLearn – The training ground for a new career
After acing the rigorous army training, Anupam decided that her future would be best-suited towards analyzing data. An avid data science enthusiast, she joined ProLearn’s full-time data science program to help her get battle-ready for the challenging world of big data and analytics.
Anupam stated that it was a unique experience to be back in a classroom setting after so long. She mentioned that her days are a bit hectic due to full-day classes. However, at the end of the day, there is a lot to learn, so everything else takes a backseat. She also added that she has been learning languages such as R and SQL, and it’s an added advantage that her knowledge of programming from her engineering days is helping her do well.
Summarizing her journey so far, she shared that her overall experience at ProLearn has been great.
From weapons to data science tools
Anupam was a part of G4S, a security agency where her main work was to manage people. And through the years, Anupam realized that she liked analyzing and solving problems more than managing people!
Switching over from a career in defence to data science seems unconventional, but Anupam was always fascinated by the world of data. It’s for this very reason that she swapped her defence weapons for a bright future with data science tools.
She researched the scope of data science and found out that it is among the trending jobs worldwide. However, making the switch wasn’t an easy task. It took her two years to decide what she should do next in life. Furthermore, Anupam also took a few aptitude tests and consulted a career counsellor, who recommended her a career in data analysis.
The drills of life
It was Anupam’s stint in the army that helped her truly develop and transform her personality. Coming from a small city like Meerut, she was an introvert and was not able to socialize easily. But her stint in the army changed it all.
After getting a degree in Industrial and Production Engineering (a sister branch of Mechanical Engineering), she joined the defence forces. She recalled that her army training helped build her personality and wasn’t only about weapons and vehicles.
Army setting is supposed to be challenging, we have seen in several Bollywood movies, right? So we couldn’t help but ask her about her difficult times during her training. She shared that one of the biggest challenges came during her first posting in Udhampur. She was the only female officer in a regiment of 700+ people. It was here that she learnt how to open up, make friends and most importantly - deal with pressure and stress.
ProLearn experience? Locked n loaded with fun and learning!
For Anupam, every day at ProLearn is an interesting one. In her own words, “There are new experiences all the time and it is a different feeling to be the oldest person in the classroom.” The feeling of nostalgia is something she experiences every day, and it’s been a fun ride because it’s like she’s revisiting her college days.
Also, learning new things every day is a big part of her experience here. She expressed her gratitude to her classmates, who have been friendly and helpful and have been giving her insights on new technologies to keep her updated.
All in all, Anupam is one ProLeaner who is going all guns blazing in her pursuit of success. Data analytics is her passion, and her stint in the army will surely prove helpful in dealing with the unpredictable nature of work associated with a fast-paced job in a field like data science.
