People from more than 110 countries used the popular online accommodation service for their trip to this year’s Olympics host city.
Travellers
Travellers from the Republic of Korea, Egypt and Morocco showed the highest interest in searching (mobile) for accommodation in Rio. Closer home, Sri Lanka was also not behind in the race and became the fourth top country to book lodging in Rio through Airbnb. Macao, Jamaica and Morocco were among the top regions planning a last-minute trip to the city. The online search rate for accommodation in Rio during this time of the year surpassed that witnessed during the city’s popular Rio Carnival and New Year celebrations.
Popular neighbourhoods
All the popularity naturally turned Rio into the world’s costliest destination on Airbnb. The costs went up to $206 for a day’s stay. However, that did not stop travellers from planning a trip to the city. Among the most preferred neighbourhoods of Rio were Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca. Portuguese was the top language spoken by most travellers in Rio. English and Spanish occupied the second and third spot respectively.
