RestartHer 2018: Every Woman Returning to Work Needs to Know This!
By Aditi Bhat
India’s economy is progressing at a rapid pace with millions of new jobs being added every year. However, despite all these developments, an alarming statistic that demands everyone’s attention is that India’s female workforce makes up just 24% of India’s total workforce.
It is not that women don’t enter the workforce. It is just that a lot of women quit after a few years of working due to a variety of reasons. These typically range from maternity to inability to give time to family. But today, many women are looking to get back into the workforce after a hiatus. Getting back involves its own set of challenges like facing skill obsolescence due to the emergence of new technologies.
Starting the journey
To help women in getting back to work, Jobsforher association recently conducted an event known as ‘RestartHer’. The organization aims to upskill and empower women who have taken a break from work and want to get back into the workforce. Manipal ProLearn, one of India’s leading providers of online learning programs, was the reskilling partner in this endeavor.
Some of the luminaries who graced the event included Seema Ahuja, Vice President and Global Head of Communications, Biocon; Nandini Sarkar, Global Workforce Inclusion Leader, Boeing International; Dr. Yogesh Bhatt, VP – IT Education and Training – Manipal ProLearn (Academics); and Gautam Shetty, Indian Hiring Lead, Maersk GSC. These leaders provided their inspirational insights via workshops and seminars which encouraged women professionals to get back on track and reach great heights of success!
Among the various things that the session touched upon, the first and the foremost was work readiness. It’s well known that after a maternity break or a health break, the mindset of people often changes. To get women back to work, Jobsforher provides various types of counselling to discuss career options and provides tips to prepare mentally for the same.
The road to reality
The session then focused on the reality that times are changing faster than ever. The skills that were required for jobs just 2-3 years ago are becoming obsolete now. As quoted by Dr. Vishnupriya, Head of Program, MAIT, Manipal ProLearn, "New technologies like AI, DL, Big Data have emerged and are changing the landscape. It's important for everyone to acquire these hard skills. In addition to acquiring them, women can do wonders if they polish their soft skills like personal branding, professional networking, and assertiveness".
In this inspiring conference featuring women from various walks of life, especially those who have taken breaks and restarted their career several times, the focus was on the challenges of a new work environment and how professional courses scan help in not only coping up, but also thriving in the same.
Moving ahead is the key
After a professional hiatus, women are often left wondering where they stand and what roles they should take up. The session featured several important tips for women that can help them in identifying where do they currently stand, and how they can gauge both the stage of learning readiness they are in as well as the learning style that suits them by using scientific techniques like Bloom’s taxonomy and Feynman’s technique.
Jobsforher’s RestartHer program in association with Manipal ProLearn, offers women a methodical and structured continuing professional development program that features career counselling services, resume writing advice, assessments for gauging career readiness, aptitude tests, entrepreneurship ability, and a curation of some stellar online courses designed to help women in reskilling themselves.
All the women who’ve restarted their careers and are thriving had one message for the fellow fraternity - the world is moving ahead at a rapid pace, and so should you. Embrace the current job world by upgrading yourself and diving right into it.
