A Peek into the Future-What to expect in PMBOK® Guide Sixth Edition
It is election time in the US of A for the office of the President. Eagerly watched by the world, this event happens every four years.
Another event that happens every four years is the publishing of the new edition of the PMBOK® Guide. The edition that is in force now is the fifth one. If one goes by the precedence, the sixth edition should be out at the end of December 2016. Again, if one goes by the precedence, starting July 2017, PMP® examination would be based on the sixth edition.
PMBOK® Guide has two parts, broadly the standard (The Standard for Project Management of a Project) and the description. The exposure draft of the standard for the sixth edition was open for review during March – April 2016. Here is what I gathered from the review of the same. The following list is only indicative and not exhaustive.
- The linkage between project and business strategy would get stronger in the sixth edition. The same trend was also there when moving from the fourth to the fifth edition. This also gels with the changes to the PMP Examination Specifications done in January 2016.
- Agile would get more prominence. Again, this was seen in the fifth edition too
- Project Time Management will be called Project Schedule Management. This would make it consistent with the other knowledge areas. For example, Project Scope Management is about managing scope.
- Project Human Resource Management will now be Project Resource Management. The term resource would include human resources and other (non-human) resources. I think earlier management of other resources was a part of Project Procurement Management
- Some new processes have got added or relocated.
- Manage Project Knowledge for example. I remember a course participant from a software company asking about why there was no mention of knowledge management at all in PMBOK Guide®. His wish has now been fulfilled. Wish I remembered his name!
- Implement Risk Response is another new process. I always thought risk response actions became a part of the WBS and got scheduled like any other work in the project. It will therefore be interesting to see what is this new process about?
- Control Resources, the new equivalent of the present Manage Human Resources is now a Monitoring and Controlling process. We seem to have come full circle. In the fourth edition Manage Human Resources was a Monitoring and Controlling process. In the fifth edition it became an Executing process. And now it is again Monitoring and Controlling process.
