It’s Happening! Doctors are Getting Superseded by AI and here’s Why
By Aditi Bhat
The final frontier of technology is envisioning intelligent machines saving human lives and creating a disease-free world. Artificial intelligence is bringing this vision to reality. Taking decisions for us in the most critical health related instances, AI is working hand in hand with doctors to provide quick and accurate treatment and at times outperforming them in certain aspects like diagnostics and genetics.
Faster, stronger, sharper
IBM Watson was able to do in 10 minutes what a human expert took 160 hours to perform, when challenged to review genetic data of tumour cells and recommend relevant treatment.
The AI diagnostics system developed by experts at Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, is capable of diagnosing a heart disease with an impressive 80% accuracy.
These examples prove that AI is seen as the 21st century stethoscope to help the healthcare industry answer the ever-growing medical needs while improving time and cost per patient ratio.
All major players from Google to IBM are bringing their best data scientists together to dominate the AI-healthcare market globally. Rapid innovation in healthcare is creating dynamic opportunities for professionals with big data analytics training and competencies like Hadoop certification.
Let’s look at how AI is superseding doctors in achieving better treatment outcomes.
Data to diagnose treat and prevent
AI and data analytics have vast opportunities in the medical world owing to the colossal amounts of well-documented and structured patient data available.
This data is crucial for developing fast and accurate algorithms. There have been instances of visual recognition algorithms developed for diagnosing skin cancer outperforming doctors. In a study, artificial intelligence machine found 95% of melanomas compared to 86.6% dermatologists finding them.
Help in faster diagnosis and swifter decision making
Time is the most important factor in critical health emergencies like a stroke, accident or an organ transplant.
With cases such as a stroke where every second matters, machine learning algorithms are taught to spot blockages in the blood vessels and report them back to the surgeons on their smartphone. This auto analysing CT scan software developed by the company named Viz is allowing doctors to reduce the treatment time in emergency wards by recommending treatment options too.
AI applied to prioritise the treatment of patients in accidents & emergencies
A NHS hospital in London teamed up with UK’s national organisation for data science to employ AI for prioritising treatment of patients in the accident and emergency department. The AI will enable the department to fast track critical patients through swift scan and diagnosis and also assist in medical decision-making.
The data doctors – You can be one of them
Neither the doctors nor AI can really replace each other but will depend on each other for their own unique abilities in providing better treatment to patients. Owing to its capabilities in understanding huge amounts of data, AI will play a key role in emerging fields like precision medicine and predictive treatment. The Human Diagnosis Project is an ambitious attempt in this direction that combines data from over 7500 doctors and 500 medical institutes in more than 80 counties to draw insights with medical treatment value.
A doctor’s profession is noble and so is a data doctor’s profession. A professional course in data analytics can help data enthusiasts tap the growing data science related career opportunities in healthcare while redefining healthcare.
