Over the years, the world has witnessed a tremendous technological transformation, especially in terms of artificial intelligence (AI). What was once just a concept today is marking its presence in several verticals. From playing our favourite song on our mobile devices to turning the lights on in our bedroom, AI is playing a vital role in our day to day life.
Graphics designing is one such sector that has gained quite a good traction lately — it is booming. From involving physical work labor to software skills, the sector has evolved significantly, and today, with the advent of AI, it is prophesied that it is just going to get better. The graphics designing sector is on the verge of another remarkable revolution, as artificial intelligence and machine learning has already emerged in this field.
However, with all the admirers, deniers have also come as an add-on, raising questions like — is AI about to completely take charge when it comes to designing? Will it be able to do exactly or better what a human can do? In this article, we are going to have a look at just that.
The Rise Of In-Built Temolates And Presets
Be it freelancers or employed, graphic designers are always in a dilemma — whether their design will be appreciated or it will be a piece that would come back for rework. A negative answer from the client is enough to make a designer feel skeptical about its creativity and skills — it blows the confidence of them.
It is no surprise that graphic designing is not a cake walk — it needs a tremendous amount of skills of using sophisticated software, and Adobe Photoshop is one such example. However, to make things a bit easy for the designers, there are tools that come with presets and templates — all they need to do is use their creativity and tweak.
Canva is one such software that has gained significant traction off late. Canva is basically a web tool loaded with a bunch of easy-to-use features and functionality. The tool also has a significant number of templates (both paid and free) that anyone can use and tweak to create a variety of graphical content. Whether you want to design a social media post or banner or invitation card or business card or flyer or any other form of graphical content, Canva got your back. It is without a doubt, one of the best graphic designing platforms that are available today.
Designers get numerous ideas for designing; however, not all design ideas turn out to be the best and reason is them not being able to predict how the end result would look. This is where prototyping tools come into the scenario.
Prototyping tools basically provides you with a platform where you can have look at the end result of an idea without writing a single line of code or without doing any graphical tool work. They are built in such a way that they let you simulate how the application flow, test their performance and create a great user experience for applications and websites.
Is Machine Learning And Artificial Intelligence Is The Next Big Wave In Designing?
Today, things are becoming more advanced than ever with the advent of artificial intelligence. It is no more just about prototyping tools or online tools with inbuilt presets and templates. Many are worrying that AI will soon become a rival and kill all the jobs that are meant for humans; however, that’s not true. AI time and again has proved that it is here not help. And talking about the domain of graphic designing, AI is not a graphic designer’s enemy but a new friend, offering a helping hand to make things easier.
Artificial design intelligence (ADI) is one of the best examples of how AI can make designing easy for you. Website builder WIX has its own ADI that uses algorithms that curates customized design for the clients — it asks the clients a few questions and based on that it designs an entire UI. However, clients might not be able to create an entire website; so, it is usually done by web designers. Therefore, AI is basically making the process easier for the web designer. Once the customized UI is ready, the web designer can do the necessary tweak and deliver a website that stands out. The major reason behind AI being incorporated in the designing domain is the speed it delivers. AI is capable of analyzing large amounts of data rapidly and provides alternative designs.
Generative design is another aspect where AI is advancing significantly. If in case you don’t know what generative design is, it is a design process that generates a certain number of outputs using a program. The outputs are later fine-tuned by the designer in order to deliver a result.
As continues to evolve year by year, there are today an entire cohort or tools and applications that not only identify the exact image content but also recognizes whether it’s a human face or any other thing and it’s called image recognition.
The Ultra Advancements Of AI
We have talked about some of the mainstream uses of AI, now, let’s have a look at some of the magnificent job AI has done till date in terms of designing and art.
AI-generated faces are one of the most talked about topics right now. Modifying the basic GAN architecture, Nvidia has created some images that are fake human faces. They look so realistic that one would wonder how scarily this sought after technology is evolving.
The engineers of Nvidia used a method called style transfer — it is the kind of the same concept that social media platforms’ image filters use to make your selfies post worthy. Using this method the engineers blended characteristics of one image with another and created customized faces to a level which was just a concept a few years back.
Another example of AI’s supremacy was shown in the British auction house, Christie’s. The auction house auctioned an art for $432,500. If you are wondering what is so special about it, the art was created by an AI algorithm. The AI created 11 portraits and it was one of them.
What is more amazing is the fact that the algorithm used over 15000 paintings to generate this specific piece of art. Also, the AI created a signature which is basically a mathematical algorithm suggesting that the work is done by an AI and not by a human.
Outlook
Technology can It’s evident that artificial intelligence is rapidly gaining incredible traction in a designing domain — offering opportunities automate some of the most monotonous tasks. This not only helps in focusing more on the strategic decision but also help in delivering customized, intelligent, efficient and relevant design experiences.
Talking about the replacing humans, it cannot replace human developers and designers as it cannot possess the ability to be creative — it can only create things that it is programmed, while on the other hand, a human has the ability to understand another human. So, if you are a designer who has been worried that AI would take your job, don’t worry it won’t. Rather, these sought after technologies will prove to be the most effective partner of human in web development and design.
