Can you remember the last time that you eagerly waited for something to launch? Was it the launch of the iPhone 7, the 1+ 5, the Xbox One S, or the latest season of Game of Thrones? If you love the HBO series, we’re sure nothing can beat the excitement of catching the show as soon as it premiers. The electricity and anticipation in the air before a new season launches is almost palpable. It’s not just season 7 that has this effect on its fans, each season was as eagerly anticipated as this one.
How did it grow to become so popular?
Season 6 had over 25.1 million viewers and that’s not counting the ones who illegally watched the show. As you know, it takes more than just a great story and production to make the show as big as it is. We tend to overlook the fact that they have an amazing team in charge of product management over at HBO. Here Game of thrones is a product that they look at with keen interest and this has been a main reason for its rapid growth.

Changing Business Models
HBO’s chairman and C.E.O. Richard Plepler stated that their move to online platforms has also helped the shows growth. They have moved beyond just catering to what the fans like, how to keep their viewers hooked. They work on how to get more people to watch the show, and that’s through their new business model. He said - “Combining the convenience of HBO on Demand and HBO Go with the subscription flexibility of HBO Now, our programming is being exposed to an ever-growing audience.”

Game of Thrones is one show that does not disappoint. They go all out in terms of the show’s quality and attention to details. They spare no expense and if you’ve noticed, the attention to detail in each episode and in each scene, is faultless. This visually stunning product takes you across the globe to exotic places such as Northern Ireland, Croatia and Malta, thus providing us, the viewers, a chance to explore more of the world than just the USA. Each new location that they choose brings in the viewers from there and also gets people talking, comparing and eager to find out how the new location plays into the story.

Targeting the right people at the right time
The show offers something that we all need – a chance to escape. This fantasy show also deals with problems all of us in the modern world face such as problems with the government, religious issues, sexism, race issues and more. Looking at the number of people that battle these issues daily, it’s easy to see why the show became relatable. The best part is, these problems don’t go away, which is why people come back to watch the show year after year and season after season.
They also launched the show at the right time, there was no other show or movie after Lord of the Rings that met the criteria of fantasy as well as they did. Fantasy fans were eager and ready to accept this series to fill the void that LOTR left behind. The team at HBO managed to capture them and get them to stay by making the fantasy world ‘cool’ and not nerdy. They used violence and graphic content to keep things interesting and far from nerdy.
