Formula-1 Racing Technology Redesigns Healthcare

McLaren is one of the most famous names in the world of car racing also known as Formlula-1 racing. With a long history of racing and winning the races, McLaren is not only about racing. It also supplies medical monitoring expertise to Birmingham Children’s Hospital (NHS Hospital) and telemetry to San Francisco’s BART transport system. McLaren is able to do so because it has turned to high-speed and advanced data analytics to gain a competitive edge in the market. Heavy volumes of data gets generated during a F1 race. Hence, engineers at McLaren used F1 technology to collaborate with the healthcare technology to achieve amazing results.
Business Challenge for NHS Hospitals:
Monitoring the patients round-the-clock for vital body changes and deterioration. Traditionally, such vital signs are recorded by nurses on paper every 4 hours. It is not very efficient always.
Using Formula-1 data analytics technology along with the expertise of the NHS in diagnosticsto treat congenital heart diseases better.
McLaren used its extensive and unique expertise in “real-time data collection and analysis” and collaborated with NHS to launch one-of-its-kind project. It is called The Real-Time Adaptive and Predictive Indicator of Deterioration Project (RAPID). McLaren used SAP-HANA Database to analyse the Big-Data produced by the telemetry sensors hooked to the patients and medical devices. These sensors are also used in Formula-1 racing cars to record countless data points during a race.
The bio-telemetry unit, hence, formed by combining wireless F1 sensors with NHS diagnostics technology, the RAPID project can now monitor the patients round the clock. The moment the graphs for vital body processes go up or down the prescribed values, the alert systems notifies the doctors immediately. This helps in a quicker and better response from the doctors that, in turn, is extremely crucial to save lives. Doctors can monitor the congenital heart ailments better, given the continuous monitoring of the heart. Tracking even the smallest amount of deterioration towards a cardiac arrest provides doctors with earlier warning signs. This enables the doctors to take precautionary and “in time” measures to avoid heart-attacks in patients.
The real-time analysis provided by RAPID technology helps the doctors in diagnosing the problems precisely with zero error rather than trying the conventional methods of diagnosis. It works quicker.
This technology has helped maximise the performance and efficiency of NHS hospitals.
RAPID has enhanced the management of patient deterioration to a large extent.
