Nobody likes change. Nobody likes stagnation either. In fact, stagnation may probably be worse than change. Change indicates some kind of directional progress but stagnation only leads to a circle of monotony, which is extremely difficult to break out of. It is no mere job of professional escapists – we all feel trapped in our careers at some point or the other. There are days where it becomes a task to get your feet off the bed and head to work. With the growing corporate sector and employment rates, especially in the Information Technology industry, there is a constant battle to grow. Everyone is looking at different ways to climb up the corporate ladder. In a world where you are in constant competition to be at the top, you can’t afford to be stuck in a monotonous rut. It is time to dust yourself off and start climbing again.
Below are five ways that make it easier to do more climbing and less stagnating:
1) Build a Knowledge Bank
Everybody loves an employee with specific in-depth knowledge about their work. So if you feel stuck at any level, it’s important to keep studying further. The concepts of your core subject will continue to remain the same. Only easier tools and technologies are to be used to make your everyday work life easier. There are several online books, courses and platforms that can help you do so and brighten your IT career.
2) Upskill Yourself
In a world where technology is advancing so rapidly, your current skillset might become redundant in a few years. So, it is upto you to keep track of the upcoming IT and enterprise learning technologies and upskill yourself in order to make yourself indispensable in the ever-evolving Information Technology industry.
In a career deadlock, it really helps to sit down and honestly list down your strengths and weaknesses and map out the direction of your future growth and the means of strengthening both your strengths and weaknesses. Only with an honest self-assessment, will you be able to choose the work best suited for your skill set.
4) Make Sacrifices
An IT job is no stroll in the park. If you really want to make it to the top, it takes blood, sweat and tears to do so. It requires time, dedication and effort to grow. Often you might find yourself working late at night, missing on sleep and food to do so. Nothing comes easy and the only way to survive the jungle and break the monotony is by putting in that extra effort, which involves some sacrifice.
5) Understand your work environment
The IT industry is highly complex. It becomes essential to understand your own potential, and choose projects that you will be best suited in. It is also important to understand your boss and accordingly work up to their expectations. The trick to break the monotony is to shoulder the additional baggage with a smile and to have a great deal of patience, because most of the time a steady effort will get you to the top.
