Data Wizards of Manipal ProLearn all Set to Work their Magic!
By Afia Ahmad
28 learners, 11 months and 1 dream to become a data science wizard. November 10, 2017 marked the celebration of this transformational journey at the convocation of Manipal ProLearn's PG Diploma in Data Science - Class of 2017.
As Mr. S Vaitheeswaran, CEO, Manipal Education & Medical Group; CEO & MD, Manipal Global Education Services rightly said, first experiences tend to stay etched in our memories. So naturally, the first batch of our PG Diploma in Data Science program certainly holds a special place. This significance isn’t solely because they were the first ones to join us in our endeavour to bridge this industry’s talent gap in the country, but also because they proved their mettle during every challenge thrown at them.
A little backstory on our students – most of them had comfortable jobs before joining Manipal ProLearn’s PG diploma course in data science. However, they decided to hone their skills in the constantly emerging field of analytics and was it worth it? Well, the results are for you to see. Their exceptional data science skills have been identified by companies like Deloitte, Fractal Analytics, and Gramener among others. That’s undeniably a great start to their careers.
Tying up with technology
Mr. S Vaitheeswaran, CEO, Manipal Education & Medical Group; CEO & MD, Manipal Global Education Services explaining how the advent of internet has opened up a world full of opportunities.
With an idea of what’s in store for our passionate data science masters, we can’t help but wonder how rapidly the world has changed around us. Highlighting the speed at which technological innovations have transformed the world in the past decade, Mr. Vaitheeswaran reminded us how carrying several e-wallets in our phones these days has become a necessity while back in the day all we needed was just a tiny wallet.
Internet, which has shrunk the world has also made way for digital learning. This, in turn, is creating several opportunities for those passionate about learning and upskilling themselves. Learning is a continuous process, especially in this day and age when organizations are always on the lookout for employees who believe in reskilling and staying abreast with the technological innovations in their fields. In fact, we couldn’t agree more when Dr. Narayana Sabhahit, Registrar, Manipal University stated, “Excellence is not an option anymore, it is a necessity.” Well, it certainly is if you want to survive the cut-throat competition.
Expanding opportunities in a shrinking world
Today, learning is not about earning a degree anymore. It is about staying relevant to your field and passionate professionals are ready to go the extra mile to stay updated with their industries. This unquenchable thirst for knowledge is what pushed our leaners ahead and from what we have seen, they look unstoppable!
Mr. Ramabhadran A P, CEO, Manipal ProLearn explaining why India is being looked upon as a game-changer in the field of analytics and how we can help bridge the global talent gap in the industry.
In fact, this is a trend we have been noticing in the young India. Mr. Ramabhadran A P, CEO, Manipal ProLearn shared some insights on India’s potential to emerge as the knowledge and talent hub of the world. He mentioned, “India possibly has the single-largest potential to be able to impact the entire world in not just the areas of Artificial Intelligence and data science, but also entrepreneurship. It is the single largest demographic export we can do across the world”.
Mr. Ramabhadran further shared the three must-have qualities that organizations across several industries look for in professionals. The first factor is their functional knowledge while the second includes their ability to work in a team, their design thinking and various other aggregation skills of being able to put together their data and intuition experience. The third quality is their learnability quotient, which represents the persistence of the candidate.
However, one vital factor to be noted is that the demand and supply for talent in the market has completely overturned in the past one year. Large IT companies that made close to 7000 offers last year are maintaining distance from hiring any fresh talent this year. These companies have also not been keen on campus visits this year. This statistic is shocking when recorded in a country like India where hundreds and thousands of B.Sc IT and M.Sc IT graduates gear up to join the industry each year.
Creating a future
A majority of Indian educational institutes still focus only on churning out coders. The biggest challenge for us presently is to ensure that we don’t just produce coders, but make way for specialised experts in areas like machine learning, Artificial Intelligence, big data, data analytics and other related subjects. Manipal University has been among the pioneers to focus on creating a future for them, and ProLearn’s Post Graduate Diploma in Data Science has been an initiative in this direction. The fact that our second batch of the program has grown approximately 4x the first batch stands a testimony to the kind of results we are offering to the industry.
Manipal ProLearn is proud to bring our learners one step closer to their dreams by providing them the required opportunities. We wish the best to all our 28 students who are now part of one of the most challenging, but equally rewarding fields. Here’s a quick look at some of the highlights of the event:
