Celebrating the Spirit of Womanhood – Savage Style
By Aditi Bhat
March is all about celebrating women empowerment and equality. We at Manipal ProLearn, joined the purpose by rolling out a thought-stirring video series aimed at gender parity. The video series slammed the clichéd remarks, which are often directed at women, with intelligent and savage responses. These befitting replies came from none other than the women themselves, who dismissed the outdated norms imposed on them with a slight touch of humor. The series created a lot of buzz amongst teens, students and working women. Here’s how we did it.
Why it is time to ‘Be Savage’
Through every phase of a woman’s life - starting from studies, marriage, to raising a child - a woman comes face to face with an outdated set of norms and taboos that try to limit her potential. Our campaign #BeSavage is a stance against this gender bias, particularly in educational and professional fields. It is seen that these biases are often found within the family. #BeSavage takes on such remarks by showing how women at every stage of their lives are using their wit and knowledge to bring forth a change.
Celebrating by dismissing student life taboos
Education plays a vital role in demolishing gender disparity right from early student life. The first video in our #BeSavage series shows a worried mother who thinks the only skills her daughter needs are related to cooking. However, by investing in learning new skills and pursuing a course in the latest in-demand fields like digital marketing and mobile app development, the girl dismisses that age-old perception.
Ripping apart professional life taboos
Working women have to cope with some of the most biased remarks often about morality and integrity. While professional obligation can require us to work late into the night or manage work on the phone, this logic simply does not seem applicable in case of women. This disgusting and narrow-minded perception is demolished with a well-suited savage response in this video. After all, it doesn’t always have to be a love story. Even success stories can keep you up all night.
For professional women, it’s not worthwhile anymore to ignore these subtle and offensive remarks. It’s time to turn the table and expose the disparity in thinking by actions that speak louder than words as shown in this video.
By regularly investing in short-term courses in the field of your interest, you can enhance your skills and knowledge to exploit every opportunity and prove your talent.
Discarding outdated norms
Many academically strong girls are often forced to quit their studies in India. Reason? The social pressure of getting married ‘at the right age’ or you won’t find an ideal match is imposed on them. This video from our series tackles this taboo with a savage and thought-provoking response.
Further, the parents in the video believe that finding a ‘well-settled’ match is the only way a woman can thrive in her life.
This video portrays the exact same situation with a twist. The girl armed with the confidence of quality education discards this notion with an equally savage response to mute the gender-biased society.
Many long-term courses can help you pursue higher studies easily and at your own pace. These easily accessible courses can add weightage to your resume.
Denouncing post marriage roles
Married women often have to quit their career to take over the irreplaceable role of a mother. Unfortunately, only a few of them make a return to their professional career. Husbands have a huge role to play in supporting their life partners pursue their professional ambitions too, as aptly planned beforehand by the woman in this video.
Super specialized skills can give you a definite edge over the competition. Online certification programs in fields like product management and accounting are a favourite among many professionals to speed up their career growth.
Winds of change
Manipal ProLearn’s campaign delivered an important message celebrating the spirit of womanhood. The video series got over 28000 views and dozens of positive comments. We aim to continue encouraging women by promoting education through #InvestInYou, which is a battle that hopes to end gender disparity, one day at a time. Wouldn’t you want to join us in our endeavor?
