Can You Digest this Data in a Minute?
By Amit Kumar Nahata
The internet was wide awake all night (and probably kept half the population up for no reason!) while you were contemplating getting out of the bed. On a serious note, have you ever imagined the amount of data that is shared online throughout the world? And yes, you too have a significant role to play in it – whether you go online to read a blog on data science or decide to continue your quest for that special Pokémon.
Let’s start with the Messiah of the Internet – Google. Your friend inneed answers about 3.5 million queries in a minute! Yes, that’s how brilliant Google is. Meanwhile, it looks like people cannot get enough of social media, which is also witnessing a boom with 900,000 Facebook logins, 46,200 Instagram posts, 452,000 Tweets sent and 1.8 million snaps created in just 60 seconds.
A minute on the internet
While you are wondering if you should send that fourth answered message to your ex, 16 million texts are being exchanged in less than a minute! Facebook’s Messenger is equally popular and witnesses an exchange of 15,000 GIFs alone in a minute! If that was not enough, plenty of people also seem to be chilling watching Netflix (amounting to approximately 70,000 hours).
Feeling awful about not having anyone to talk to? You can probably resort to online shopping to pamper yourself, where the world spends about $751,000 in a minute (and then people complain where does all their money go?)!
Did your friend just bail out on your weekend plan, saying he/she isn’t feeling well? Probably, he/she is telling you the truth or perhaps hiding something from you. Oh, did we tell you, Tinder witnesses a whopping 990,000 swipes in a minute!
The internet is not all about fun and games though. People are also using it for the right reasons – LinkedIn sees about 120 new users every minute while 156 million emails are exchanged globally in 60 seconds! Phew, that’s a lot of dedicated people out there! Imagine the number of data scientists who have to work their fingers to the bone to process this kind of data! No wonder this is the best time to start a career in this thriving field!
