The field of data science requires integration and accommodation into other streams for it to be successful. Data scientists are expected to work alongside their own and extended teams. To inculcate the importance of teamwork, Manipal ProLearn recently organized an outbound training for its full-time students of the PG Diploma in Data Science course. The training was based on the ‘Brief-Activity-Debrief’ model, where students were divided into teams and were given different time-bound tasks. How did they perform? Let’s find out!
Focus on communication skills and strategic thinking
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strategies are an integral part of the corporate world. At ProLearn, our focus is to instill these qualities in our students and prepare them for the real-world where limited resources are a common challenge. Moreover, they are also expected to work in and with different teams, adding to the challenge. We adopted a fun way to hone these traits in our students during the training activity. The students had to perform an activity called ‘City Hunt’, where they had to hunt down a list of cities in the order specified by the facilitator.
The teams had a list of objectives to be achieved in a limited amount of time and had to communicate and strategize clearly to be able to do so. These activities were designed to strengthen their communication skills and their ability to work in a team.

Overcoming challenges in any scenario
A data scientist’s career is not free from challenges. Data scientists are expected to understand the problem and efficiently utilize the available resources to overcome the challenges they face. Manipal ProLearn’s outbound training program included an activity called the ‘Gateway’ to boost these skills in the students. They were given an hour to create a gateway for themselves and to mark their exits and entrance in a maze.
The teams were given limited resources and time to complete the task. So they had to work together and make the best use of the situation to overcome the obstacles – a skill every data scientist must possess.
Learning the importance of teamwork on the run - literally!
Taking risks to meet goals
As mentioned earlier, data scientists are required to make use of the available resources efficiently. Sometimes it requires taking risks to achieve their targets. Careful planning and the ability to take calculated risks are important skills that make a good data scientist. The ‘Pass the Water Balloon’ activity was aimed at inculcating the same in our students.
The activity required a team member to pass (by throwing) a water-filled balloon to his/her teammate without letting the balloon burst. The teams were required to complete the task within 45 minutes. The activity involved tactical planning and taking risks to meet the goal.
Our students learning to take risks in the most fun way possible!
Manipal ProLearn constantly strives to train students beyond books and classrooms. The outbound training was an effort in this direction – to create a holistic learning experience for our students. Our curriculum is designed in a way that our future data scientists are prepared to take on every challenge, task or job that comes their way.
Happy teams after a day of fun and learning!
