Is Artificial Intelligence Turning You into a Shopaholic?
By Aditi Bhat
Artificial intelligence or AI, has had a long standing relationship with the retail sector. Take Amazon’s ‘recommended’ section, for instance. Once you log in, you can see a series of items that are starkly different from other user’s account. The list is based on what Amazon’s AI thinks about your tastes and preferences.
Artificial Intelligence is being seen as an instrumental technology for making the customer journey smoother and for helping consumers get what they want even quicker. Let’s see how AI is going to make you shop till you drop
No more long queues
Mashgin and IMAGR, start-ups based out of California and New Zealand respectively, are working on technologies that can make the process of checking out as easy as strolling in the park. You can pick up any item from the supermarket shelf and a software will keep calculating the items added in your cart. Your cart will be linked to your mobile wallet, which means you can directly walk out of the store without waiting in queues. Now this is one store that you will feel like visiting again and again!
Higher customer engagement
It’s no secret that higher customer engagement has a direct bearing on sales. If a customer starts spending more time inside the store, his/her purchase ticket size is going to get bigger.
Peppers, a robot created by SoftBank for engaging with customers has already shown stupendous results in stores across California, USA. It helped with a massive 98% increase in customer interaction, and 300% growth in revenue. This AI-based robot is just one of the many ‘salespersons’ that are going to be created for retail purposes.
Want a list of all the dresses that are on sale? Want to find something to match with the t-shirt you purchased? Saw a dress online and want to find it inside a store? These AI-based robots can help you with everything!
Adding convenience to life
Seems like the makers of Snow White could actually see the future when they wrote “Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…”. Very soon, you will be able to talk to and interact with Magic Mirrors inside retail stores. They will make your life so convenient that you will be able to see yourself in a choice of attire even without wearing it. A lot of people dislike trying out many clothes because it’s both time consuming and inconvenient, and let’s not even get started on the long queues outside trial rooms.
You will be able to stand in front of these mirrors, scan your body, and then put on any piece of clothing you like.
Artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning are going to revolutionize the retail industry by offering consumers more choices and more convenient ways to make decisions. And given that the retail industry contributes considerably to a country’s GDP, there is going to be a huge demand for AI and Machine Learning experts.
