The Indian IT scenario is transforming in ways no one had imagined. Companies are now getting bigger and taking up more technical projects. It’s also the perfect time for a student to rise and make it big in this industry.
The IT landscape in India has changed
To give you a better understanding, take a look at the diagram above.
Traditionally, Indian IT companies were seen as delivery centers and were working on only the first four kinds of projects. However, times have changed and today, the fifth area is gaining prominence. Therefore, global organizations are now giving complete responsibility for product development to their Indian counterparts based on high-level specifications. In fact, the IT industry is now mature enough to take on these kinds of projects.
Let's take Amadeus, a big player in the Travel IT industry, as an example. They've now set up their Research & Development (R&D) centre in Bangalore and are increasing the amount of product development work happening in India. Furthermore, Target, Lowes, Walmart and many more global players have set up their R&D centres in India. Hence, it implies that we are now moving from “Order Takers to Decision Makers."
The changing role of the Indian IT Architect
The skill sets students require to be able to do this are also transforming. The Architect’s role has taken on a whole new meaning. Most companies in the IT industry are investing heavily in hiring students as IT Architects who can contribute towards their product development. Furthermore, success is no longer measured only by the complexity of management decisions made – but by the complexity of the technical decisions as well.
Today IT Architects are standing neck to neck with Managers when it comes to:
- Talking to clients
- Deciding which projects to take on
- Assessing the competence levels of the team
- Deciding the kind of competence the team needs to acquire
- Contributing to business top line and bottom line
If you’re a techie at heart, you can live your dream by acquiring the competencies of an IT Architect.
Today, as a student, you have to not only focus on your skill sets as an IT architect, but you also have to be well-rounded as a business leader! All the best.
