Imagine all the complexities that directors and producers have to go through in order to make a film. You’ve to get your most preferred superstar to like the script, get their dates for shooting and promotions, bear all the starry tantrums, and so on and so forth. Now imagine getting away with all of it – sounds like a producer’s dream right? Given the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence, it won’t be long before producers simply start recreating their favourite film stars with the help of AI.
Artificial Intelligence and VFX in Action
In 2013, after Paul Walker’s demise, the Fast and the Furious franchise makers had a difficult task at hand filming his remaining scenes. Their VFX lab suggested that they use some old footage and couple it with CGI (computer generated imagery). They did so successfully. Go figure out which scenes are real, and which are computer generated. It will be difficult to decipher. And that was 2013!
There are many more such instances of using computer generated imagery. Audrey Hepburn, who passed away in 1993, was recreated by Galaxy chocolates for one of their recent adverts. Imagine how many past superstars can be resurrected, all thanks to artificial intelligence. But will it pose a threat to the current actors? Sure, it will.
We can totally imagine the Oscars in 2050 – “And the Award for the Best Actor goes to 1408 Statistical Analysis Processor!”

Loss of Jobs?
Scientists are predicting that the role of artificial intelligence will extend beyond recreating film stars. With AI’s help, computers will auto-edit movies, create soundtracks using a sequence of pre-recorded loops, and maybe even generate scripts based on a few plots fed to them.
There will be an unprecedented impact on the creative industry, with over 50% jobs moving from humans to AI. The timeline for the same maybe a bit blurred, but it is being said that all of this can happen by 2050.
A Reddit Thread for AI and Hollywood
Reddit, one of internet’s most popular websites, has created a sub-reddit for deep fakes. As the name suggests, deep fakes employ deep learning algorithms. Members are reportedly creating machine learning techniques that have been successful in morphing faces of Hollywood stars in movies that didn’t originally feature them.
Nicholas Cage was recently seen morphed in a few scenes from The Indiana Jones and Terminator 2 – Judgment Day. And if a few people sitting at home can manage this, then to think of what sophisticated AI and machine learning programs can do is simply mind blowing.
Whether we like it or not, AI is going to have a massive impact on our lives. Right from replacing digitized jobs to even ones that require one-on-one human interaction, you will see a huge intervention by big data analytics, CGI and the likes. So, what are you waiting for? Help create the next great Hollywood hero with your skills!
